Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney made Milwaukee, Wisconsin a household name in the hilarious sitcom Laverne and Shirley. You know it, too, as the place where Old Milwaukee beer and Brewers’ baseball were born. However, there is traditionally little fun for those in brew city who suffer from chronic pain or other ailments. Now, even they can find relief at the Xiaodan Acupuncture clinic.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture, as practiced by clinics like Xiaodan Acupuncture in Milwaukee, is rooted in 3000 years of traditional Chinese medicine. As has been clinically substantiated, there are bioelectric currents that run through the human body. Qi (chi) are these currents, also known as meridians or connected channels.

Chinese medicine practitioners, like those at the local Xiaodan Acupuncture clinic, believe that when this flow is balance there is harmony in the body and it is healthy. However, when something interrupts that flow, then the body is in disharmony and unhealthy. It is the practice of acupuncture, then, that restores the balance in chi and health to the patient.

What are the Risks?

There are remarkably few risks to acupuncture performed by a professional, as seen at the Xiaodan Acupuncture clinic, but some patients have experienced minor bleeding after the needles are removed, bruising may occur at the puncture site, and some even experience dizziness.

However, these risks are far from commonplace. In fact, most patients have minimal if any discomfort at all. The greatest risk, as with any medical procedure that enters the human body, is infection. The risks of unsterilized needles in acupuncture are the same as in any medical facility, or anywhere the skin tissue is penetrated. More minor risks are simple infections at the site of penetration; however, more dangerous threats include hepatitis and HIV transmission.

Because of the risk of such pathogens, the United States mandates that ALL acupuncture needles are sterilized following a strict guideline. Additionally, most are of the single-use variety found in hypodermic needles at any western medical facility. It’s always wise, though, to watch the acupuncturist remove the needles from the sterilized packaging before allowing them to be used on your body.

Where can I go in Milwaukee?

The Xiaodan Acupuncture clinic is located at 10625 W. North Avenue; however, there are other places should that clinic still be too far away. Consequently, you may need to consult your handy hard bound version of the Milwaukee yellow pages, or an online version, for a professional acupuncture clinic nearer you and start living a healthier pain free life.

For years in China, medical techniques have evolved from local care givers that until recently the western world knew nothing about. Teas and other medicinal drinks as well as manipulation of the body using acupuncture were all hiding from most of the west. The ability of western doctors to heal with surgery and drugs made the Chinese methods seem like folklore. It was if the Chinese methods would never work. Through time, the west has learned that much of the so called folklore really does work. It’s safer and less harmful to the body. One of the most accepted practices now used is acupuncture. What is acupuncture? Acupuncture in its most simple form is to promote health and alleviate pain and suffering. In the same way that a traditional doctor can look at a person’s blood pressure, acupuncture looks for energy channels call meridians that work together for better health.

Acupuncture is what is used to unblock energy pathways in the body. In more recent times, other acupuncture techniques are used more than the needles people associate with acupuncture. Those are still used but they also use lasers and magnets and even pressure along the same points. Acupuncture is what many athletes use in conjunction with traditional medicine to ward of the pain that comes from being an athlete at the top levels of human abilities. If it didn’t work, people wouldn’t continue to use it.

Acupuncture Is What Oriental Medicine Uses

Many people who have never tried acupuncture wonder if it hurts. Most have no idea what the needle even looks like. The needle used in acupuncture is actually smaller than a hypodermic needle used for diabetes. It is solid and not hollow like other needles. Most people who have had acupuncture say that there isn’t any pain. A person might feel some pressure or even some tingling but the pain isn’t present. Some other people say that they feel tingling in other parts of the body and not at the site of acupuncture. Acupuncture is what oriental medicine uses and it might be explained like what a chiropractor does with manipulation except with energy.

While there are still many doctors who look at acupuncture as a childish endeavor, the art of acupuncture continues to show promise everyday as it is being tested concurrently with western medicine. With the twenty first century comes other methods of using acupuncture and it continues to look promising. For more information look on a website for acupuncture or look in the local phone book for an acupuncture clinic close to home.

Those who have decided to try acupuncture as a part of a treatment plan are frequently nervous about their first session. They do not know to expect from this treatment both in how it will feel and what the results will be. Since it is not a standard medical treatment they have very little guidance on what will happen. Only infrequently do they even know anyone who has had acupuncture and so they have no one to ask for advice, or warnings or just general information. Many people will look it up on the Internet to get some answers, but this is not the same as talking to someone who has experienced an acupuncture treatment. It may give them some general information, even the impressions of some patients, and hopefully some success stories. But it many not offer enough to make them feel comfortable with what they are about to embark on. This usually means that when the patient walks into the treatment room they are more often than not nervous and feeling apprehensive.

The acupuncturist will talk to them and try to calm their initial fears. They will explain to them what a treatment is going to feel like and what they might feel after it is over. Of course this is hard to explain because each person reacts slightly differently. They will be assured that the treatment will cause no pain to the patient. Sometimes a mild tingling is felt, sometimes the area will feel numb or an area nearby the needle may have these sensations. But once the needles have been extracted these feelings will stop. They will leave feeling no worse than when they entered and hopefully a little better. The needles used are thin and solid, not hollow like standard medical needles. That means that it will not feel the same as when you are having a blood test or getting an inoculation.

During a treatment the acupuncturist will tell their patient to try to relax. Then they will explain what to expect after a treatment. The patient will be told that they may notice some improvement, but not necessarily after the first treatment. Most treatments last from six to ten weeks with an average of one to two treatments weekly. This depends completely on what condition is being treated. Rarely there may be a little bleeding during a treatment, if this happens there is no need to be upset. It is not dangerous and does not interfere in the outcome.

Be certain that the clinic you go to for acupuncture uses pre-sterilized disposable needles or needles that have been sterilized and disinfected the same way surgical supplies would be when doing your treatment. You do not want to go to one where the needles are suspect; it is a simple health precaution. A licensed acupuncturist will take the correct precautions. You must also be certain the clinic you pick has only licensed practitioners. You can confirm this by asking your health care provider to recommend a licensed clinic.

Traditional Chinese medicine is sometimes abbreviated to TCM or T.C.M. and it is a series of traditional medical and health practices that have been put to use in China and have developed very slowly, over a period of what some say is thousands of years.

Some of the natural medical practices that are a part of traditional Chinese medicine include acupuncture, herbal medicine and massage. Traditional Chinese medicine is a type of Oriental medicine, which is to say that it takes into consideration other traditions medical systems that evolved in East Asia such as traditional Korean medicine and traditional Japanese medicine. According to TCM, the processes that compose the human body are interconnected and are constantly interacting and interrelating with the environment. This theory of health thus seeks to isolate what causes imbalance and disharmony in both the internal as well as external environment of a person and from there it seeks to comprehend a health problem as well as effectively treat it and work to prevent further illness or disease from taking place in the future.

The theory of traditional Chinese medicine is base on more than one philosophical viewpoint. In fact it is based on a variety of frameworks with the most influential being the human body Meridian system, the Theory of Yin and Yang, the Zang Fu organ theory and the Five Elements. Diagnosis for health conditions as well as proper avenues for treatments are decided upon based on these concepts. In a general sense traditional Chine medicine is not connected with the scientific outlook of the modern Western way of thinking but some practitioners do try to make sure that it is conducted in an “evidence-based” framework of health and medicine.

What is today known as traditional Chinese medicine was once called classical Chinese medicine (CCM). For a period of 30 years CCM was outlawed in China until a man by the name of Mao Zedong decided in the 1960s that something had to be done in regards to classical Chinese medicine. During those years he gathered together 10 of the top doctors of the time and had them take a cryptic look at CCM by surveying it carefully and then coming up with a standardized format for which it could be put to use. It is this standardized form that came to be known as what we know it as today, which is traditional Chinese medicine.

Western culture and its modern scientific approach to medicine have not reduced the interest in TCM at all. In fact a great deal of the TCM practices have shown high rates of success and therefore when Western medicine is found wanting, many patients turn to TFCM in the hopes of being healed. The advantage of TCM is that it does not involve drugs, with the exception of an occasional herbal supplement and therefore patients avoid concerns about chemicals polluting their bodies and dangerous toxicity levels. There are areas in the world where Western medicine is not available and therefore TCM is very important in these areas. TCM has proven to be especially effective when it comes to problems such as a variety of allergies and the flu.

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to alleviate the symptoms of many conditions and to promote a feeling of good health and well being. Acupuncture works by triggering the release of endorphins and serotonin in the brain and central nervous system. These chemicals, endorphins and serotonin, have a strong effect on a person’s mood and the feelings they have, they can make you feel down and in pain or happy and pain free.

The traditional method behind the treatment is to accentuate the flow of “qi”, which is believed to be the bodies natural flow of energy. Today qi is used more like a metaphor and acupuncture is one of the most well known, and most widely used treatments in a complementary fashion.

How is acupuncture carried out?

Acupuncture is carried out by hundreds of small needles being inserted into special points in the body, these points are known as acupuncture points and are located along meridian lines where qi is supposed to flow likes streams, rivers and seas. In the body there are hundreds, if not thousands of acupuncture points, all of which are related to different medical conditions and used for alleviating different symptoms. The points are found by an acupuncture therapist feeling for pulses in the body, mostly around the organs, this will help them determine which acupuncture points to use.

What is acupuncture used for?

Acupuncture has been used for a wide variety of medical conditions for a few millennia, today we use acupuncture for medical conditions like asthma, high blood pressure, pain, headaches, digestive problems and women’s menstrual problems.

Are there any adverse effects from acupuncture?

Overall acupuncture is a very safe treatment, especially when carried out by a qualified medical professional. When carrying out acupuncture it is important to make sure that needles are sterilized so infection does not occur. After treatment many people feel effects differently, while some may be energetic and vibrant, others may be drowsy and tired, for this reason it is important to make sure that you do not drive or operate heavy machinery.

When inserting needles into the body, the medical professional will be very careful, because if care is not taken then damage to tissue, muscle and organs can occur. If a female is pregnant then special care need to be taken as there has been proven scientific research that shows some acupuncture points can induce labor.

Summary

There are many acupuncture practitioners throughout the world who can carry out the treatment correctly, if done correctly a patient may feel positive effects to their medical condition. With acupuncture there is a lot of uncertainty over its strength to act as a medication or treatment that can resolve a persons condition, but even if it cant treat a condition it does act as a great placebo because of its effects on a persons levels of serotonin and endorphins.

Even if you’re unsure about the possibilities of acupuncture resolving your medical problems, it can be a relaxing experience if nothing else.

Acupuncture is a treatment that can alleviate the symptoms of many physical and psychological problems, the theory behind acupuncture is that the needles are placed in special points of the body that will stimulate nerves in the body and encourage the body’s natural defenses to heal and repair itself.

It has been reported that acupuncture can affect nearly every one of the bodies systems from the central nervous system and digestive system to the urinary tract and reproductive organs.

What medical conditions is acupuncture primarily used for?

Pain Relief – Acupuncture is widely used to relieve many different types of pain from muscular to skeletal. The reason why acupuncture is so affective against pain is because when someone is being treated with acupuncture, the endorphins and serotonin levels in the pain pathways of the central nervous system are raised affecting the way pain signals are received.

Irritable bowel syndrome or mild incontinence – It has been widely reported that acupuncture can effectively help the affects IBS or mild incontinence has on the bowel and bladder.

Allergies – There are many allergies like hay fever, eczema and many other allergic reactions. It has been said that acupuncture can reduce the tingling and itching sensations felt by those who suffer badly with allergies.

Smoking – A lot of people have said that acupuncture has helped them quit smoking, this can be because of the soothing feelings that occur during the treatment and the affects these have on a persons mind.

The medical conditions above only scratch the surface of what illnesses acupuncture can help.

History of acupuncture

Acupuncture is an old remedy used by the Chinese for over two and a half thousand years to promote and maintain good health.

It may be surprising to learn that the first ever acupuncture needles used were made of stone, these later evolved in to bronze then gold and finally silver before today’s needles were developed.

The acupuncture of today is a descendant of Daoism philosophy dating back over 2000 years, this philosophy was written in text and described medical knowledge of the bodies organs and the meridian network, including where the acupuncture points are located in the body.

It may be surprisingly to learn that acupuncture did not cross the east west divide until the 20th century, in fact it was in the1970’s when the people of Great Britain became interested in this interesting treatment and the affects it can have on the body. Due to the interest it has gained, a number of scientific studies have been carried out to look at acupunctures affects. There is still a lot of research needed to find out how successful acupuncture is in treating all the different conditions it is used for.

Since 1970 acupuncture has grown in stature and many people believe it is a credible treatment that they can use for so many different ailments. Even if you don’t have an ailment, and you just want to improve your body’s health then it can be worthwhile having a session of acupuncture.

Although acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in China, it has taken the Western world much longer to embrace its many benefits to health. In fact acupuncture still remains largely out of the realm of most traditional hospitals and clinics and the secret of how it works is still a mystery to many in the medical community.

In November of the year 1997, the National Institute of Health (NIH) held a conference to discuss acupuncture and they attempted to make sense of it from a scientific point of view. Western medicine has always been highly scrutinized and the research into whether this treatment or that treatment works is very well documented. Health problems are classified into particular categories and from there diagnosis are determined. Patients are treated according to specific criteria that define a particular diagnosis of a problem.

In acupuncture an individual is treated according to his or her own particular symptoms and there is no diagnostic manual to consult. An acupuncturist treats every person on a uniquely individual basis. In Western medicine the treatment of a health problem is based on a diagnostic evaluation, which is based on symptoms and signs of the problem whereas acupuncture seeks to evaluate and assess the present situation and diagnosis comes about through its own merit. To explain it a simpler way, Western medicine makes health decisions according to research studies and statistical analysis that form the basis of standard approaches to getting rid of diseases, infections and disorders whereas acupuncture strives for a sense of individualization of each and every one of its patients.

Everyone wants to have the absolute best care available to him or her when they get sick but in the western world we have been led to believe that there is only one approach to medicine that is worthwhile. Conventional medicine is based on a “traditional scientific model” and medical doctors tend to follow the same format from person to person. When a patient visits a doctor he will ask questions regarding the symptoms of the problem as well as find out about the person’s medical history. Then tests will be ordered and once the results are in, treatment will recommended. Some conditions will have the option of more than type of treatment of therapy.

Being based on a tremendous amount of research, a great deal of education as well as practical experience most people lean towards Western medicine to cure them of their health problems. They make the assumption that any kind of treatment that is alternative or falls under the heading of “natural healing” is akin to something a witch doctor from the backwoods would prescribe. However many patients who choose not to turn to acupuncture as a form of healing will consider experimental therapies or treatments that are still in the research stages and have not been approved for medical consumption.

The conference found however that more and more medical practitioners are broadening their views to include acupuncture and other forms of natural healing. While Western medicine has its pluses, it also has its limitations and often times the two kinds of medicine can work together in a harmonious way to help patients improve their levels of health and quality of life.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is considered to be a form of alternative medicine in the Western world, which means that it is looked at as a viable form of medicine only when more conventional Western methods of treatment fail. However in both Taiwan and the mainland of China, traditional Chinese medicine is an essential and a very valuable element of the health and medical care system.

Traditional Chinese medicine was once thought of as traditional medicine or folk medicine and it was a kind of “non-invasive therapeutic intervention” that was deeply rooted in ancient beliefs that included traditional religious ideas. There are other forms of traditional medicine that have disappeared whereas TCM has remained strong and a valuable part of the healthcare system in China although attempts have been made to integrate some of the more modern Western principles of medicine. The instruments and methodologies of Western medicine in particular have been combined with the observations and hypotheses to help balance TCM out as much as possible and to make it as useful for people as it possibly can be.

The fact that TCM has remained such a large part of the Chinese medical system is a surprise to many people because in most areas across the globe, modern Western medicine has the upper hand when it comes to infections and diseases. It is interesting as well that traditional Chinese medicine has remained a separate, branch of medicine all by itself as has not completely merged with modern Western medicine. This is not what has happened in other intellectual areas such as for example, there is no longer Chinese biology or Chinese physics as it has merged with the broader Western view.

Traditional Chinese medicine has effectively been used to treat many conditions with its highest rates of success being attributed to treating the unfortunate side effects of chemotherapy as well as treating both the cravings as well as the withdrawal symptoms that are often experienced by drug addicts. TCM has shown to be effective at treating a host of chronic health conditions that modern Western medicine has found it difficult to resolve. As well traditional Chinese medicine is often used to successfully treat infections that are resistant to any number of antibiotics.

TCM is based on the philosophy that the human body is a “small universe with a set of complete and sophisticated interconnected systems, and that those systems usually work in balance to maintain the healthy function of the human body.” The balance of the feminine yin and the masculine yang is related to qi, which stands for breath, spiritual energy or life force. Blood (or jing) in the TCM framework stands for semen or kidney essence, while TCM also includes the Five elements, other bodily fluids (such as tears and urine), emotions and finally the spirit or soul which is referred to as shen in traditional Chinese medicine.

While the modern Western approach to medicine looks at the human body in terms of parts, the traditional Chinese medicine model is more concerned about the particular function of an organ.

Sticking needles in your body to treat acne? Isn’t that overkill?

Surprisingly, no. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in China and the East, and one of the benefits is that the skin tends to clear up. Some with painful cystic acne that can leave scars find long lasting help treating acne with acupuncture. Your pimples or cysts aren’t usually punctured by the special, slender acupuncture needles. You usually get treatment on your ear.

It Is For Real

At one time, Western medical circles were very skeptical of the Chinese practice of acupuncture (inserting needles into special places on the body called acupuncture pionts). But after decades of study, it is starting to be embraced (albeit carefully) by conventional as well as alternative healers around the world. Although it looks very painful, a trained acupuncturist knows where to insert the needles painlessly. Acupuncture works for animals, even the notoriously skittish Thoroughbred racehorse, often making the animal go into a deep state of relaxation.

Like a lightning rod attracts and directs the immense power of lightning, so an acupuncture needle attracts and re-directs the energy currents of the body. An acupuncture treatment can zone in on one specific area of complaint, but often you are asked about your entire medical history so your whole body can be worked. Acupuncture is called a holistic form of treatment, since your entire body, emotions and stress levels are also seen as having powerful effects on your health. Treating acne with acupuncture is not as far-fetched as it might first sound.

The Finer Details

It is thought that hormone imbalance can cause the body secrete more oils than it really should. Treating acne with acupuncture can help regulate your body’s hormone output, and thus make your skin clearer. Treating acne with acupuncture isn’t a magic cure-all, though. You still have to eat a balanced diet, wash yourself consistently and avoid heavy makeup or products that might irritate your skin.

Sometimes treating acne with acupuncture can be covered by some health insurance, but often it isn’t. Keep the costs in mind, as well as your doctor or dermatologist’s advice, when considering treating your acne with acupuncture. Even acupuncturists say that the best way to combat acne is by preventative means. Your doctor or dermatologist might even know of an acupuncturist to recommend to you. You may have to go for as many as twenty or thirty treatments. Acupuncture can also help with other skin diseases like psoriasis, dermatitis and warts.

People often find in alternative medicinal practices a better means to get relief from their troubling ailments because by using the resources given to us by Mother Nature we are able to cure our ills as well as diseases and it does not even require using toxic drugs, which are often accompanied by serious side effects. This is a viable alternative even to the huge healthcare industry valued at about 1.3 trillion dollars, which constitutes about a seventh of the U.S. economy.

Using These Tools Acupuncturists Can Treat Many Ailments

Among the viable alternative health treatments available today is acupuncture, which made use of tools in ancient Chinese acupuncture such as herbs, exercise as well as nutrition, needles and massage to provide relief and the tradition has been passed down for over a thousand years. Using these tools in ancient Chinese acupuncture, traditional Chinese doctors as well as present day practitioners are able to identify as well as prescribe suitable therapeutic responses for a whole lot of human ailments.

These tools in ancient Chinese acupuncture have been handed down over three thousand years and patients find their bodies responding instantaneously to the various methods employed. When nutrition, which is an important tool in ancient Chinese acupuncture, is given, the patient will immediately notice an increased feeling of well-being as well as feel more vital. And, when this nutrition is used along with nutritional supplements as well as when herbs are also added, the body will start to reverse the process of the disease and thus the patient will feel a lot better.

If the tools in ancient Chinese medicine is also accompanied by surveillance as well as correction, the patient will notice that a remission in their symptoms as well as gets alleviation from the same symptoms. The body begins the process of healing itself and there is a noticeable reversal of symptoms, with the body quickly responding to the acupuncture treatment.

It is thus necessary for the patients to become proactive about their bodies and to use all the available tools in ancient Chinese acupuncture so that the herbs of nature and more will help them find relief as well as have them healed and regain harmony with themselves.

There has been a noticeable change in the tools in ancient Chinese medicine that are being used today as compared with the ancient varieties. With fish bones being used came a change that was a departure from bamboos used until then. Later still, the use of metals came about and the needles were made from copper, silver, and brass as well as, in some cases, gold. The use of metals gave the acupuncturist more precision as well as thinner needles and can safely be assumed as being the beginning of needle insertion techniques that continued until the present times.

With success achieved by using needles as tools in ancient Chinese acupuncture, came many theories as well as philosophies expounding the value of acupuncture that remain with us till today.
